i shoot with an olympus and noise is very noticeable at 1600. i usually use iso 400 to 800. thanks for the tutorial!
Lesson learned…use a Canon, or a Nikon!
j/k Interesting. I’ve never used an Olympus to tell you the truth. Maybe there is a higher end Olympus camera model that produces less noise? Thanks for the insight!

I love ur tutorials! i´m so happy i found this site, i´m doing outdoor/theatre dancing shoots, and i just got a d5000-sb600, it shoots great but i really wanted learn how to use manual settings to get more profesional shots, and these tuts are great!! thanks for posting…;)

Important to note, especially for those first getting into nightclub photography, or really any up-and-coming photographer, ISO and resultant grain is VERY dependent on the camera body…
Let me elaborate. As stated many times over, if you have to get one and only one piece of equipment, invest in quality LENS. That will make the biggest difference.
BUT, unlike professional, or even pro-sumer quality camera bodies, the lesser quality/cheaper camera bodies generally do not compensate for grain in high ISO nearly as well. This holds true for all types of photography, not just clubs, and even when your final product will be a web-formatted JPG.
You’ll still be able to take exceptional photos with a non-pro camera body, but avoid grain by shooting BELOW an ISO of 800 until you can invest in a better body with a better sensor/algorithms.
Of course there is always someone with an exception to every rule. If you find your non-pro level camera takes awesome pictures at an ISO of 1000+, great, lucky you, and keep at it!
